SHARKS: DANGEROUS OR ENDANGERED? One night, we see a woman swimming in the dark sea. Suddenly, she is pulled underwater. Then she surfaces, cries in fear, and disappears. This is the start of the 1975 movie Jaws. It shows a shark attack. The movie is about a big white shark that attacks swimmers. Jaws was a big success. It won awards and made many people watch it. After that, people thought the big white shark was very dangerous. This idea got strengthened. People were always scared of sharks, but Jaws made it worse. It made people frightened of sharks, especially the big white one. Many people who watched the movie thought sharks were bad animals. Some were so afraid of the horrible sharks in the movie that they stopped swimming in the sea. Others started to catch sharks. They caught as many as they could. At that time, no one cared if sharks were killed or how many were killed. People just wanted to kill them. After 1975, the number of big sharks near America went down fast. This happened all over the world too. This was not only because people were afraid of sharks, but also because of finning. Finning means catching sharks and cutting off their fins. Then the sharks are thrown back into the sea. They die slowly and painfully. People use the fins to make shark fin soup. Every year, finning kills millions of sharks.
